Why Collagen is Important

Why Collagen is Important

Here is a fun fact, collagen isn’t just for healthy skin! These days collagen is promoted as a popular supplement to take, but did you know it has many benefits beyond helping maintain youthful skin?

All of our connective tissues (skin included) have a collagen matrix that helps maintain its strength and integrity. I like to think of this collagen matrix as being similar to Velcro. A strong collagen matrix is like having a very tight hold Velcro that is difficult to pull apart. As that Velcro wears out over time, the connection isn’t as strong and there become breaks in the cross linkages. With skin, those breakdowns in cross linkages show up in the form of fine lines and wrinkles. Internally, collagen reduction can cause tendons and ligaments to not be as strong or rigid which can lead to an increased risk of injury. It is important to maintain a strong collagen matrix to keep bones, tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissues strong and healthy as we age.

We produce collagen in our bodies naturally, and the best way to support this is by eating a nutrient rich diet with collagen containing foods. Maintaining a diet rich in omega-3 fats, antioxidants, vitamin C, and adequate protein will help with the natural production of collagen in the body. This would include a variety of fruits and vegetables, protein distributed evenly throughout the day, and nuts and seeds. Collagen containing foods typically come from animal sources such as small fish with bones (sardines), bone broth, and gelatin.

Some individuals, especially those following a vegetarian diet, may choose to add a dietary supplement of collagen to their regular routine. If you choose to add a supplement, make sure to pair it with a source of vitamin C, such as a glass of orange juice, to enhance the absorption. It is also recommended to take collagen supplements 30-60 minutes prior to exercise for the largest benefit to tendon and joint health. One of my favorite brands is Klean Athlete Collagen +C because it already contain vitamin C for enhancing absorption and is NSF Certified Safe for Sport. You can order yours at the eNRG Store HERE.
